In the last post, we explored the nature of shyness including its roots and symptoms. We ended by discussing some of the causes of shyness, and noted that faulty thinking about socializing is the most significant one. Today we will examine in greater detail the self-sabotaging mindset that leads to shyness. Framing our social interactions with faulty beliefs contributes to shy feelings and behaviors in two ways. First, faulty thinking makes social encounters seem more stressful and threatening than they actually are. So much so, that the shy individual will feel a sense of dread in simply contemplating these interactions, and will avoid socializing in order to prevent imaginary harms from befalling them. Second, the anxiety created by negative, misguided cognition will often trigger acute self-consciousness during social encounters. This self-consciousness, as we will see, perpetuates a cycle of shy feelings and behavior that prevents people from successfully and comfortably socializing with others.

You like him, you like his friends, you like his moves in the bedroom. You wonder if he could be husband material. Then he sits you down and tells you that he has bipolar disorder. You find yourself unsure about whether or not your courtship should continue. Chances are, we either know how to handle it, or we are working on it. We Are Going To Need To Talk About Our Feelings People with mood disorders — bipolar, depression, borderline personality, anxiety and others — have learned that holding in our feelings is bad.
It makes us feel very intense negative feelings, and they are usually about ourselves. Moreover, when we feel bad, we have bad thoughts and might want to do bad things, like polish off a whole bottle of liquor, call up our ex, or get behind the wheel while in an agitated state. To ensure that we do not end up drunk dialing someone, or worse, we have to make sure our feelings do not get the best of us.
So we have to talk. We need less sleep. We are more social, in an erratic sort of way.

Contact Us What is Social Anxiety? Many people have particular worries about social situations like public speaking or talking to authority figures, or experience more general feelings of shyness or a lack of confidence. For some, however, these social anxieties and fears can become much more troubling and difficult to cope with. Everyday tasks which most people take for granted – such as working, socialising, shopping, speaking on the telephone, even just going out of the house – might be a wearing ordeal marked by persistent feelings of anxiety and self-consciousness.
Public performances or social gatherings might be out of the question. When the social anxiety becomes this bad, sufferers could be diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder, also known as Social Phobia. Shyness is not a criteria for diagnosis. Sufferers differ in how naturally reserved or outgoing they may be and in regard to the sorts of situations or people they might find most difficult or might be OK with.
Individuals who are particularly socially inhibited, avoidant and sensitive to criticism or rejection may meet criteria for Avoidant Personality Disorder, now seen by many as only the more extreme or generalised end of an ‘SA spectrum’.
The Anxious Spouse Healing
Approaches to spouses with the conflicts above are addressed in other chapters on this site. The offended spouse should try to understand why a spouse is acting in these ways, work on trying to forgive this spouse and ask the spouse to grow in various virtues to diminish these conflicts. The emotion which attaches to the value of the person is loyal. For example, damage to trust can lead to a distorted thoughts that “no one call be fully trusted” or that “I need to control people and my life so that I won’t be hurt in a similar way the future.

Email Advertisement Do online dating websites work? To explore this topic, I pulled aside two individuals who I knew were hunting for a long-term relationship using online dating websites, and asked them about their experiences with the services. The two services used by these individuals were OKCupid and Match. What I learned from carrying out an interview of a female and the interview of a male trying to dig into this intriguing subject was that using the Internet for dating is equally painful for men and for women, but for very different reasons.
No…online dating involves just cold, shallow text. As far as a guy is concerned, women have it made. They have the choice of the litter. All they have to do is get online every day, sitting on their princess throne and file through the dozens or more profiles of men who have messaged them throughout the day. Unfortunately, the reality is nowhere near that fantasy. To get some insight into what women go through on these dating websites, I pulled aside one of my family members who I knew had spent some time on these sites looking for her future spouse.
By the time of this interview, she had already given up and moved on, finally discovering her future husband while visiting old friends at her alma mater. Her responses completely surprised me. What year did you sign up with an online dating website and how long did you keep your account?
